Eco-friendly repairing jewelry is trendy. Indeed, it is! This is no news that we live in the pursuit of money, in the world of consumers who constantly want more. We are being flooded by short series of mass-produced things in well-known chains. So I have a proposition – let’s focus on the products! Real, reliable – created by small producers and craftsmen. And let’s fix what is worth it and can be repaired – clothes, shoes, furniture, as well as jewelry!
It’s Kate here. You can associate me with an instagram, and if not, I will tell you: I am responsible for most of the things that appear under the brand OBJET d’ART. Today I come with a theme that may seem a bit unfashionable. It’s about repairing jewelry, which in my opinion is trendy and eco-friendly. I invite you to read!
Why is it worth repairing jewelry?
That’s why I willingly accept jewelry for repair. Usually, when we go somewhere, like last weekend, where we were at 22. Exhibition of Folk Artists and Artistic Crafts of the Polish-Czech Borderland, I have a set of tools and some substitute elements that allow me to carry out basic repairs – making a new fastener, replacing damaged eyelets, weaving out a worn element or stitching something. My Przemyslaw is surprised, but it makes me very happy when I see a satisfied customer leaving with a repaired little thing.
It is worth remembering that in today’s pursuit of the ecological style of being and living, repairing things is simply fashionable and is part of this trend. From the trip to Prudnik I came back with a full can of various jewelry: rings, broken brooches, broken chains, damaged bracelets and necklaces, and a broken eagle pendant carved in a malachite. The eagle is already glued together and polished with files – it managed to glue it nicely and despite the lack of a fragment of the beak, it still looks beautiful 🙂 All the rest are in the study, and then return to the owner, who brought me this can.
How to repair the jewelry?
Sometimes it turns out that you are able to repair your jewelry yourself. If you miss some elements, you can try to buy them in a stationary or haberdashery or at craft trades, and if you have clever fingers, you will be able to handle it yourself. However, if you do not have the patience, you can take your jewelry to your purse when you are going to the fair in the near future. Ask a craftsman who makes jewelry in a similar style, it will probably fix your piece for a small fee and you will be very satisfied. Sometimes you can fix your jewelry yourself. Other arguments speaking for repairing jewelry
There are quite a lot of them, but I will mention a few obvious ones.
- the originality of jewelry – often older jewelry is beautiful and unique. It is often what is the icing on the cake and perfectly completes our creation.
- it is a good gift for a person who has a hard time to give something (eg our moms, aunts or grandmothers often have a lot on every occasion when we look for a gift for them.) We usually have a bigger problem finding something original and useful, which will give pleasure – maybe it is worth to find the damaged brooch or pendant in the casket and give it back for repair, especially if we know a craftsman who knows the case)
- damaged jewelry can be turned into a different decoration, so instead of another necklace, we can have a new brooch.
If you know another important reason, please add this comment in the commentary, it will definitely be important 🙂
When should I repair my jewelry?
Sometimes it is not worth repairing jewelry. You have to rationally assess or rely on the opinion of an expert (craftsman) whether the given jewelry can be repaired.
It may happen that the craftsman will not want to repair the jewelry. Do not fight with him, you can not be his domain. You have two options – or you will look for another craftsman who will make repairs, or accept that the jewelry is irreparable.
Listen to the craftsman – if the pendant can not be repaired or repaired, it will not look very good, the specialist can offer you to make bracelets or brooches out of it. Perhaps this item will be as beautiful as the original pendant, and you will be happy because you will still be able to wear it, despite the changes.
When the jewelry is very damaged…
In extreme situations, when your jewelry is really badly damaged or broken, you can replace it as scrap or have it strip to the first part and re-assemble it in a similar or different form. For example, now I have 3 bracelets to make: one completely torn from the sunstones, which is a bit too little, the other to exchange the dilated string of amethysts and the third of Turquoise stones, which is badly made and pulled for tiny hairs on the wrist.
Eco-friendly repairing jewelry is trendy. I’m going to do a thorough lifting of the metal cans, I’m proud of the effects. I am going back to work and I wish you a pleasant afternoon!
